MAKE YOUR MARK - Interview with Michaela Menichelli

When did the creative idea/concept  of Michaela Menichelli collection come about? and what was it that inspired you to pursue your creative ideas and bring them to fruition?
The inspiration for my first Collection came while holidaying in Bali 3 years ago. I was in a tailor shop and stumbled across a carved goat hide while choosing leather. The hide was like a piece of art. It was a stunning blend of caramel, chocolate and white and had been intricately carved by hand in the most amazing pattern. I immediately feel in love as I'd never seen anything like it before. I had a bag made for myself using the hide and once I returned home, had people stop me in the street desperate to know where my bag was from. Discovering that other people shared my passion for the work of art I was carrying on my arm inspired me to share the carved hides with the world.

What has been the most rewarding aspect since creating MM collection and watching it grow?
The most rewarding yet challenging aspect of creating the Collection has been designing pieces that are fashion forward yet allow the beauty of the hand carved hide to speak for itself. I don't have a design background and although I know what I like it's a very different thing to anticipate what the public will like. Having faith in myself and my ability is the hardest thing for me. It's truly humbling and so rewarding to see complete strangers carrying my pieces with pride and a keen sense of style. I get such a thrill when I see customers posting images of themselves with their Michaela Menichelli pieces on social media.
How do you manage to juggle the many hats that come with running your own business?
Juggling the demands of a new business along with my husband's Wellness practice and my part time job can be a struggle at times. I'm the type of person that is forever challenging and pushing myself. I thrive when I'm busy and find I'm more inspired, motivated and innovative when I'm juggling different roles and business demands.
You recently extended your collection from Fashion accessories now into Homeware, launching a new range of Goat hide cushions covers, is this a range you would like to expand on?

Absolutely, I adore decorating and being creative with our home. Home is my sanctuary and the place where I can relax and just be. It's the place I retreat to, away from the demands of the two busy practices I work in (my Husband's Chiropractic and Wellness practice and the Plastic Surgery practice I work in part time). I love anything that is fashion forward, luxurious, detailed and textured and to me beautiful homewares are a combination of so many different elements.

What has been your greatest achievement professionally since launching MM collection?
My greatest achievement has been seeing my pieces loved and cherished by complete strangers. I get a thrill every time I sell a piece from the Collection. It's so humbling that customers take the time to take beautifully styled images of their purchases and post them on social media for others to see.

What advice or tips would you give someone who is considering starting up their own business?
Believe in yourself, trust your intuition and don't give up. If you want something badly enough you will find a way to make it work. Passion and belief is infectious. If you love what you do others will love it too.
